Where to even begin?? I am exhausted, let's start there! ;)
Let me just say that this post is a long one, but in my defense, I have two beautiful babies to 'debrief' about! They've come so far in the
last year and Sophia so enjoyed
becoming the big sister!
I'm not exactly sure how I threw this party last year being 9 months pregnant! I mean, I love parties. I love themes. I love planning. It's in my nature, but sometimes even I think maybe I get myself in over my head. I wouldn't exactly say I felt that way, but I was certainly at my limit
(I'd also like to add that I couldn't do it, pregnant or not, without my team of awesome helpers including Charlie and Mom and all my other friends that are always so willing to help! Thanks guys!). I'm glad that I let go of Sophia's party and let someone else plan it. I absolutely think I'd be in the
looney bin had I done both their parties at our house in the same week! On the flip side, I really only think I have a few more years of this craziness. I mean right now, I get to control the parties, themes, games, cakes, etc. and in a few years the kids will probably have their own ideas of what they want and don't want, so I have to cherish it! I also think that in the future each kid will have more of a small party with their friends and then we'll do a combined family party mostly just consisting of cake and ice cream....which leads me to my other thought...
Will Leo ever have friends of his own? Of course, I mean I know he
will...but when? Right now all his "friends" are Sophia's friends. Will I have to wait until he's in school before he'll get to have some for himself? There are a few babies we hang out with but it will take at least another year or so before the age difference will start to work itself out. And let's face it, I'm not very good at making friends. I thought about it when Sophia started Mother's Day Out, that maybe I could make friends with some of those moms but realistically...when do I ever chat with them?? I barely even see people drop their kids off or pick them up, so that's out. I do feel like this is one of those things that the younger kid gets the shaft on, especially when they're so close in age. I'm just hoping this dilemma will work itself out soon! ;)
Part of me is hoping though that through this transition of partying that I will soon get to go back to planning the menu, games, entertainment and party favors for
both kids, even if they do get to choose their own theme! In the meantime however, I'm okay with farming out Sophia's party and doing the big at home bash for Leo and really, it's kind of like Sophia gets two parties since he really doesn't know what's going on yet and she is thrilled with that idea! In fact, I've often thought that if I were to go into business for myself, which would probably never happen, but if it did, I'd like to be a party planner for kids. I think I'd stay away from the adult stuff, people get a little too crazy and demanding about that, but I could handle the kid stuff.
In other news I'd like to just mention a few things about their
development, speaking of birthdays! I feel pretty good about how Leo's been doing. I know I've been worried in the past about some of his
developmental milestones, but the past month or so I feel like I've seen a change. In fact, most of the things that he wasn't doing 3 weeks ago at his Parents as Teachers 1 year screening, he has started doing. Even at the time I knew that 3 weeks could make a difference in the life of a toddler, but in his case, it was a significant difference. I'm happy to report that he is standing on his own, he is walking while only holding one hand, he is now coming down the stairs on his own (as long as you turn him around first...he's so lazy!), and I really think he's very close to walking. I think maybe within the next 3-4 weeks (I hope!!) it will happen, and we'd love for it to happen before Halloween. It's not that he'll be trick or treating, per say, but there are some community events that we like to go to and it'd be way better for him to be toddling around and not have to be confined to the stroller. In terms of language he continues to babble a lot! He says 'momma' and '
dadda', and has for a while now. As far as other words, there is nothing I can really say is definite, but he will say words
(and sometimes phrases, no joke) clear as day and then you'll never hear them again. It's crazy. Everyone who hears it agrees that he said whatever it was but he is determined not to be a show pony and will not speak on command! He understands quite a bit of language though and will usually get the toy or book to which I'm referring, not always, but he's off to a good start.
Sophia is growing up to be such a character, and although this is nothing new, it gets funnier! She seems to be fairly coordinated and is adept at both standing on one foot and hopping on one foot. She loves to kick the ball and play hopscotch. She also really enjoyed hitting the ball off the tee at Leo's party. She loves the park, although the swing is still her favorite activity, she does like the fire pole and the rock walls. She picks up words and their meanings quickly and will use them accurately in conversation....for instance at the doctor yesterday when the pediatrician got out his tool to look in her ears she looked at him very innocently and said, "Is that you're
odoscope?" He was shocked, laughed and told her that yes, it was. Then she made sure to tell him that she had one at home. She is very social and makes friends easily. She is still
fairly resistant to change, but is getting better and is very thoughtful towards her friends. Of course, we're still working on the concept of sharing, but she does pretty well with it. I feel like her fine and gross motor skills are progressing equally, unlike Leo who is still mostly
focused on gross. She is still a
momma's girl who loves to snuggle and be in my lap whenever possible. She and her Daddy share lots of fun times too. He is a little more rough with her than I and I guess that's a daddy's
prerogative, but sometimes it makes me nervous! ;)
Finally, to end this epic post, here are their stats from their yearly check-ups yesterday...
Leo:
Height: 32.25 "...............100
th%
Weight: 28lbs 10oz.........100
th%
So, there's really no shocker there. I didn't expect him to be on the charts, but the doc said he's stronger than most 'big' babies he sees and is happy with his
development.
Sophia:
Height: 40.25"...............100
th%
Weight: 36lbs.................95
th%
Doc laughed at Sophia's 95
th% and said, see, she's petite! Ha! Actually, she is a little string bean, I think her percentage is just so high b/c she's so tall! She couldn't get much skinnier!
