The Cow Stops Here

So I am officially done "breastfeeding". Whew. I will admit that I am a lot happier and more functional. I made the decision a couple of weeks ago to just be done with my whole pumping routine. It was becoming quite tedious and was difficult to supervise Sophia from one spot. There were at least a few occasions where I heard mysterious noises and thumps from other rooms! ;)

I lasted about 4 months with Sophia and about 5 weeks with Leo. BUT...I tried to have a supply of breastmilk in the freezer for him and I think after all was said and done, it was almost 3 gallons, which is kinda weird to think about. I sort of envisioned a grocery store shelf with three gigantic gallon jugs of my breastmilk and I must admit I was a little grossed out. On a more personal note, and perhaps some TMI, I was apparently feeding Leo spoiled breastmilk that I must have left out too long or something. Anyway, all day he was spitting up some yucky looking stuff and then it dawned on me... Maybe something was wrong with the milk? So after a smell test and still not being quite sure I decided to take a considerable swig to see if I could taste anything funky. Well let me just say that funky doesn't describe the wretched taste in my mouth! Not only did I feel like some sort of new-breed cannibal, but I felt like the worst mother in the world for feeding him this stuff, not once but at least 3 times!!!! Needless to say, I threw all the thawed stuff out (which broke my heart just a little at a time) and vowed to only thaw in the fridge from now on. 3 gallons of milk doesn't last as long as you might think!

The only down-side to stopping the pump is that I've lost my little reading corner moment that I got each day. At least once a day, someone else would feed Leo while I pumped and I utilized that time to catch up on my reading...it was wonderful! Since then I haven't been able to make it past page 100 very easily in my new book club book, which sadly is my choice! Yikes...I better get on it...and quick!

Once the supply in the freezer is gone, he'll be on formula 100%. I'm okay with it, I mean even though we've been mixing the breastmilk and the formula he has at least gotten my milk for a couple of months. We did start him on some fancy formula that is designed for gassiness and fussiness, and I'm not sure it's working. He has some seriously foul gas smells, which is just not normal for a tiny baby! The pediatrician thought this might help. I'm not convinced that it has, maybe it's just because I don't want to have to buy the expensive stuff again! Isn't that horrible! But seriously, once I went to generic formula with Sophia, we saved so much more money in a month. Only time will tell!

He is a beautiful, healthy growing boy and we love him more and more every day, no matter what he drinks!

I am jealous! I know the pain of the price of formula. With Maddie, when I quit nursing she had to go on this special hypoallergenic formula. It was $30 a can. I am too scared of that and too cheap to quit yet. I envy you, I too have heard those scary sounds while pumping in the corner. When I walk out to the kitchen I usually see that the other two kiddos have created some leaning tower of pisa, out of legos, bar stools and vegetable cans in order to get to the Little Debbies.
So, for not having to deal with all that, I would say, you have a lot to be thankful for, this Thanksgiving.

Okay, so I have to ask...did you taste any unspoiled breastmilk? I just have this notion that it is not too appetizing to adults. By the way, I am also jealous as I am typing this one-handed while I am currently nursing.

Ah, yes, indeed I did taste unspoiled breastmilk. It was sort of a case of the curiosity killed the cat one day and I decided I should know what it tasted like if I were going to feed it to my child. It actually didn't taste that bad, actually...sort of sweet.
